E-Book Characteristic Analysis of Power Electronics and Its Applications
Power electronics is a study that utilizes electronic power devices from converting one form of electric power into another form of electric power with proper control. Power electronics generally revolves around semiconductor devices and circuits and thus the arrival of various technologies has made electronics as a crucial branch of engineering. Thus, the study of power electronics is multidisciplinary, involving semiconductor physics, circuit theory, analog and digital control systems, electrical machines and power systems, electromagnetics and electric machinery, etc. Therefore, power electronics is regarded as the field that is concerned with the use of electronics for the purpose of controlling and conversion of electrical power. To achieve this, the designing of such systems is done by maintaining interaction between source and load by making use of small-signal electric control circuits and power semiconductor devices.
It has been obvious also that power electronic systems are used in a variety of applications, such as: power generation, transmission, distribution, and control. In all these applications, the input voltages and currents are switched using power semiconductor devices to provide desired outputs. The construction of basic semiconductor devices such as diodes, field effect transistors (FETs), and bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) are altered to work at medium/small voltages and currents. As a result, we have silicon-controlled thyristors (SCRs), power diodes, power metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs), power BJTs, insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), gate turn-off thyristors (GTOs), along with or constructed in many sensors which can be connected also to Internet services platform (Internet of Things, IoT).
