E-Book Demonstration Of Freedom Of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) In Timor-Leste
The avian influenza pandemic that affected birds from most parts of the world was caused by the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI). Timor Leste is currently free from HPAI, in contrast to most Southeast Asian countries where the disease is widespread. Avian influenza (AI) is an infectious disease that attacks poultry and has the potential to spread across national borders. The above diseases are characterized by high transmission rates and severe impacts on both domestic chickens and lying birds. Additionally, it has the potential to infect various other species, including humans. The etiology of this disease can be attributed to Avian Influenza viruses (AIVs), which are classified in the Orthomyxoviridae family.
Because Timor Leste has never experienced an HPAI outbreak, according to FAOAIDE (2010b), this disease is considered exotic. Therefore, Timor Leste’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) conducted several surveys between 2000 and 2006 with support from the Northern Australian Quarantine Service (NAQS). Monitoring the prevalence of AI in general and HPAI H5N1 in particular is the aim of this survey. Geographically, Timor Leste is surrounded by Indonesia, a country where HPAI is endemic, so monitoring AI is important. This increases the possibility of an HPAI outbreak in Timor Leste. Therefore, to determine the risk variables that could lead to the introduction of HPAI into this country and to verify that HPAI is truly absent in this country, an AI risk assessment is required. This book is based on a survey conducted using sound epidemiological principles to determine risk variables and ascertain the status of HPAI in Timor Leste.
The aim of this book is to gather information to present the possibility of whether Timor Leste is truly free from HPAI and to determine the risk factors that may contribute to the introduction of this disease into the country.
