Teaching literature has a significance role in building students’ character. By reading literature, the teacher and the students are able to learn from other world which is brought by the writer. Literature has made significance change from decade to decade. It can be seen from the kind of texts; realist, modern and postmodern texts. Every decade has the characteristics which develop through the readers’ need. The realist texts are written with the old English, the modern texts are not written with the old English, and so on. Mustafa (2008) describes about realistic texts, modern texts, and postmodernist texts. The realistic texts are readers-oriented (Lodge, 1990; Mustafa, 2008) while the modern texts are writer-oriented (Thornborrow & Wareing, 1998; Mustafa, 2008). And postmodernist texts are also called self – referential.

Since what the texts of literature has changed, the teaching literature also finds the own style which is students oriented. In the past, teacher introduced literary works which are set up by the government. The students do not have a right to choose their own favorite literary works. The teacher has the authority. But then nowadays, the development of literature has increased rapidly. There are many new authors who can write and publish their literary works free as long as the readers like it. They will be exist to write and publish their literary works. Now, readers have a free choice to choose what they want to read and what they do not want to read. This essay will discuss some issues of literature; what is a literature, technique of reading literature, the role of literature, and teaching literature.
