E-Book Home–School Journey in Island Communities for a Child-Friendly Environment
This book highlights the importance of children’s home–school journeys in hinterland areas, showing how these movements contribute to shaping a Child-Friendly District (CFD). Despite limited transportation and infrastructure, children navigate walking paths, boat routes, and varied natural landscapes, demonstrating resilience, independence, and adaptability. Their journeys involve not only reaching school but also engaging in social interactions, cultural activities, and exploration, reflecting the richness of everyday childhood experiences.
Children’s mobility exhibits a dual nature: journeys to school are structured and goal-oriented, while journeys home allow for more freedom, play, socializing, and spontaneous exploration. Environmental features such as open water routes, mudflats, and green spaces enhance these experiences, providing meaningful opportunities for children to interact with their surroundings and community. This interplay between spatial and social elements underlines the value of planning inclusive and safe environments that accommodate children’s needs.
This book discusses how children’s mobility patterns, their interactions with the environment, and community engagement can inform the design of safe, accessible, and child-friendly spaces in hinterland and insular regions, offering insights that extend beyond the immediate study area.
