Oil palm is one of the wide sectors in the plantation industry. The demand that keeps increasing leads to an expansion that reach some rural areas. The expansion has both positive and negative impacts on the living creatures as well as environment in where the plantation is established. The expansion happens is not easy as company has to get permission from local people in the regions. In order to receive the permission, company offers a plasma-nucleus scheme which also benefit the local people. In organizing the permission, company asks for help from the local elites to convince the local farmers, so they can accept the offer and get the promised benefit. The permission received by the company does not eventually benefit the local people. The offered plasma plantations that will be given to the local people do not develop until years after the company going productive. Local people are disadvantaged by the expansion since they hand over their land to the company, yet the company’s production is generating pollution in their environment. Local people are also being the company’s workers in order to get regular income and survive. They have no right to manage the land as the ownership is handed over already.

These issues affect the sense of belonging of local people. They start to loss their sense of belonging since their homeland has changed a lot. Local people’s main reason for being a company’s worker is to earn income which in this state they do not have connected bond with the company. Thus, they work with no sense of being home and work not to maximize company’s development. It is important for local people to understand their right and oil palm expansion, so they can keep their belongings. This book explains aspects that cause the loss of people’s sense of belonging as affected by the oil palm expansion. There are also perspectives from local people, migrant workers, and company’s representative that explain the condition in the regions where the expansion takes place. Through this book, we can understand how to get local people’s permission to develop oil palm plantation in their land with all respect toward their traditional values and norms.
